Vaginal Biome Science

Research and Development

Research and Development at Vaginal Biome Science

At Vaginal Biome Science, our research and development efforts are driven by a bold mission: to decode the vaginal microbiome and transform care for the millions of women living with chronic and recurrent vaginal and vulvar conditions.

Despite widespread prevalence and high recurrence of issues like bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, UTIs, vulvodynia, and lichens slerosus, there has been little innovation in the standard of care in decades. These conditions are often linked toimbalances in the vaginal microbiome, a complex ecosystem that plays a critical role in vaginal health, immune defense, and reproductive function. Today’s diagnostics are imprecise, treatments are outdated, and more than 50% of vaginal infections are misdiagnosed or mistreated.

We believe better science can change that.

Reimagining Vaginal Health Through Microbiome Science

Our R&D program focuses on building the foundational data, tools, and products needed to understand and support the vaginal microbiome. This includes:

Developing novel vaginal microbiome testing tools that are more clinically meaningful

Mapping microbiome profiles across a wide range of health states and conditions

Designing microbiome-supportive product protocols based on biomimetic formulations that replicate key aspects of healthy vaginal physiology, including pH and iso-osmolarity.

We are translating this science into both clinical and consumer tools designed to offer personalized care and empower women with clear, actionable insights.

The VENUS Study

Our flagship research initiative, the VENUS (Vaginal Ecosystem and Network in the United States) Study is one of the largest vaginal microbiome registry efforts in the United States. Through this landmark study, we are collecting and analyzing vaginal microbiota from more than 1,500 women across a diverse range of life stages and diagnoses, including bacterial vaginosis, vulvodynia, lichen sclerosus, yeast infections, endometriosis, and post-cancer vaginal health issues.

The VENUS Study is designed to build a comprehensive reference database of vaginal microbiome profiles to inform diagnostics, guide treatment decisions, and serve as the backbone of our testing and product development platform.
